THIRTY-FOUR MILLION DOLLARS FOR A STRANGER’S FATHER

Shaq turned down $34M to save a man he’d
never met. In 1997, a 14-year-old kid named
Terrence wrote him a letter – his father had
been wrongfully convicted, family drowning
in $287K of legal fees. Shaq called the
lawyer directly. Refused a Pepsi deal until
they agreed to sponsor the appeal fund
instead. Took 19 months. His father walked
free. Terrence’s mother called him sobbing.
“Why would you do this?” Shaq said,
“Because somebody shoulda done it sooner.”
Terrence became a public defender in
Orlando. Never changed his number – Shaq
still calls every Christmas. Drop if you
believe some debts aren’t about money.
